In 1996, the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) became law. Among
other things, HIPAA requires that the Department of Health
and Human Services (HHS) establish national standards for
electronic health care transactions and code sets. There are
three primary purposes for this action:
How does this relate
to HealthWare Solutions?
HealthWare Solutions is
not classified as a covered entity by HIPAA standards. However,
as a health care software vendor, HealthWare has a vested
interest in HIPAA regulations. HealthWare will continue
to work relentlessly in assisting its clients in facilitating
their compliance efforts.
The very nature of HealthWare
Solutions’ products promotes HIPAA compliancy with
respect to its clientele’s internal policies. HealthWare
software works in a “multiple layer” format;
unauthorized users are restricted access to particular sections
and layers of the program and its options.
Security has always been
an integral part of HealthWare Solutions’ products.
However, due to the fact that HIPAA compliancy requirements
have not yet permeated the software industry, to say that
any software vendor is “HIPAA compliant” is
unwarranted. It is our position at HealthWare Solutions
to remain current on all HIPAA issues and procedures and
be ready for their implementation.
Due to HIPAA’s wide-sweeping
impact on our industry, HealthWare Solutions encourages
all of its provider-customers to learn more about HIPAA
regulations. The Department of Health and Human Services
maintains a website where you can expand your knowledge
regarding HIPAA at http://www.cms.gov/hipaa
HealthWare Solutions
is committed to adhering to any mandated government regulation
imposed on it, and is eager to assist you in any HIPAA compliancy
issues you may encounter.
